I recently attended a weekly car gathering that I hadn't been to before. There are many amazing things about living in California and one of them is the endless number of carshows that occur every weekend. Don't want to wait for the weekend? Heck, there's probably one happening near you on a Wednesday!
I learned of the Donut Derelict car show a few weeks ago while looking for a new car show. Donut Derelict (heretofore referred to as DD) goes every Saturday morning and is in Huntington Beach, just 60 minutes away from me. I did some online searching to learn as much as I can and was very pleased with what I found. What I loved the most is that this is more of an every man's car show, full of American muscle, the occasional odd British car and even some homemade machines.
I also learned that DD car show started in February, 1985, when a group of local friends would meet up at a local donut shop and discuss politics, house chores, racing, et al. I imagine that's how the majority of car shows get started.
